Mrs. Audrey George formed the “St. Lucia Under Twenty Club” after attending a peer counselling workshop in Miami, Florida. The name was changed to “Youth Advocacy Movement” “YAM St. Lucia” for short, in July 1998 at the Annual General Meeting in Puerto Rico. The name was changed to accommodate the members who were over twenty and was still very interested in the club.
In 1998, Mrs. George through the Association implemented a youth programme called “Peer Helpers Initiative” at four (4) Secondary Schools. Today there are over twenty-three Secondary Schools in the programme and there is still am increasing demand for the programme at other Secondary Schools who have heard of its success. The programme was introduced to eight (8) Primary Schools in 2004, where it was called “Peer Assistant Leaders” “PALS” for short.
In 2004, the Association went even a step further in reaching out to the youth by opening a Youth Centre – “De Block” which is located on the top floor of the ST. Lucia Planned Parenthood Association Building. The centre was created because Mrs. George and the YAM members who felt that there was more to be done to assist the youth.
To maintain our programmers we conduct a number of fundraising activities, and in addition, seek funding through project proposals from
donor agencies. However, if you wish to make a donation please feel free to contact us.
